CiRCLE was formed in October, 2003 by brothers Jeremy
Heath-Smith and Adrian Smith as an independent software developer and
publisher. The company creates original video games for a variety of
platforms and also publishes interactive DVD games based on popular
sports and entertainment brands and properties.
Jeremy and Adrian share over 40 years’ experience in the leisure
software industry and are the original founders of Core Design (1988).
Core was responsible for the creation of one of the world’s most
successful games franchises: ‘Tomb Raider’, featuring Lara Croft.
In early 2004 CiRCLE entered into a global publishing agreement with
Capcom for its first games title ‘Without Warning’. The deal also marked
a significant milestone in Capcom’s history as ‘Without Warning’ was the
first title the company had ever signed from a European developer.
Development of the action/shooter (PlayStation 2 and Xbox) commenced mid
2004 and the game was released October 2005.
During this period CiRCLE also explored new areas of growth within the
leisure software industry. Identifying interactive DVD as a key
opportunity, the company set up an interactive DVD division to research
and develop the format.
Throughout 2005 and 2006 CiRCLE entered licensing agreements and
collaborated with the likes of FIFA, Eurosport, Discovery and Dreamworks
to create and publish DVD games. The company’s first release ‘Now That’s
What I Call a Music Quiz’, was released December 5th 2005 and sold over
500,000 units, making it the best-selling music DVD game of all time.
The ‘Now Quiz’ was followed in May 2006 with the release of the official
FIFA World Cup DVD game - and the announcement of a licensing deal with
FremantleMedia for games based on the TV game-show classics
‘Blockbusters’ and ‘The Price is Right’. CiRCLE also collaborated with
Sony BMG to develop the ‘No. 1 Hits’ and ‘Now Magazine Ultimate Celeb
Quiz’ interactive DVD games during this period. All four titles were
released November 2006.
CiRCLE’s internal development teams are groups of highly skilled and
experienced game developers sharing a vast collective knowledge across
games hardware and software. Their experience, development methodology
and desire to push the boundaries of creativity and technology are the
company’s most valuable asset.
